Discover microalgae

Phycosource answers all the questions you may ask yourself about microalgae and their potential use.

Microalgae possess an infinite reservoir of new molecular structures. They’re the centre of a considerable and untapped biodiversity which will allow to discover new pharmaceutical, food or cosmetics active compounds

What is phycology ?

About the science of algae

Phycology (or algology ) (from the Greek : φύκος, phykos , " from ; seaweed" ; and λόγος, logos , " from ; knowledge" ;) is the science which studies algae .

What is a microalgae ?

It is photosynthesizing micro-organism (microscopic plant). Microalgae constitute the primary source of biodiversity and biomass on the Earth which makes microalgae one of the best hopes for the future of green chemistry.

What is biodiversity ?

Biological diversity or biodiversity is the variety and variability of all living organisms. This includes genetic variability within a species and its population, etc.

The fabulous history of microalgae

It is believed that the first usage of microalgae by humans dates back to Aztec times when Spirulina was cultivated in salt lakes for consumption as food.

What are the implications of biotechnology and microalgae ?

The richness of microalgae is not limited to high added-value molecules and one of the main purposes of microalgal research is to allow the development on a larger scale and at a lower cost. The issue is both industrial and environmental.

What are the various microalgae families ?

The expert site www.algopole.fr classifies three main microalgae families and scientists are discovering new ones on a fairly regular basis...

  • The Dinoflagellates :

This class of microalgae is surprising as the structure is made up of silica (glass!). These unicellular algae can live in a free form or in colonies, either within a mass of water or on the sea bed.

What is the power of microalgae ?

Microalgae are the primary source of the global biomass, responsible for the principle production of atmospheric oxygen and for CO2 consumption (photosynthesis and storage in the form of calcium based sediments: see Normandy cliffs).

What are the advantages of microalgae ?

They have a high photosynthetic yield, they do not clash with food supplies, their harvesting can be continued throughout the year (permaculture), they do not involve the supply of phyto-health products, etc.

What is an algae bank ?

An algae bank is a storage bank for algae and microalgae. Strains are kept in culture in a liquid medium and often maintained by reculturing.

What is an extract ?

An extract is a complex chemical preparation containing many molecules usually originating from a natural source (plants, animals).
