Phycology (or algology ) (from the Greek : φύκος, phykos , " from ; seaweed" ; and λόγος, logos , " from ; knowledge" ;) is the science which studies algae .

It is photosynthesizing micro-organism (microscopic plant). Microalgae constitute the primary source of biodiversity and biomass on the Earth which makes microalgae one of the best hopes for the future of green chemistry.

Biological diversity or biodiversity is the variety and variability of all living organisms. This includes genetic variability within a species and its population, etc.

It is believed that the first usage of microalgae by humans dates back to Aztec times when Spirulina was cultivated in salt lakes for consumption as food.
